South Dundas is part of the newly acclaimed Upper Canada Region
and is located on the north shore of the magnificent St. Lawrence
River, which provides a stunning backdrop to small towns, rolling
farmland and popular tourist attractions. Home to many historical
events and attractions and recreational activities, Upper Canada
region has it all. Take pleasure in a quiet day by the river watching
the ships go by or visit events like Antiquefest where you can browse
or buy to your heart’s content. Celebration 50 starts this year to
commemorate the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, an engineering
wonder and a story all on its own.
Huge ocean liners from across the world can be observed at the
passing through at the Iroquois Lock. Evidence of the old canal system
can be found at the Galop Canal Marina. The nearby Carmen
House Museum, circa 1815, depicts the early lifestyle of the area.
Visit Upper Canada Village, famous for its re-creation of pioneer
life. You can witness a military re-enactment of the war of 1812
or tour the 19th century buildings complete with costumed guides.
Enjoy a play at our renowned Upper Canada Playhouse in
Morrisburg, which offers crowd-pleasing, live professional shows in
a charming theatre and is conveniently located near a host of dining
and accommodation options and shopping as well.
South Dundas proudly boasts that it’s the home of the first
McIntosh apple tree founded by John McIntosh in 1796. The
McIntosh apple is uniquely Canadian and in 1912 a monument was
erected here recognizing this important contribution to Ontario
agriculture.
Other historical points of interest, one being of the famous Dr.
Locke, are depicted on seventeen beautifully painted murals, which
are scattered throughout South Dundas.
